Fra Lippo Lippi, St. Lawrence with Saints Cosmas and Damian

1440s
Tempera on wood, gold ground
Metropolitan Museum, #35.31.1a

Lippi has reduced the traditional gridiron that identifies St. Lawrence to a pattern in the dais and tiles below his feet. His other attributes are the palm branch and the dalmatic. Cosmas and Damian are identified by their characteristic hats. The kneeling donors are Alessandro Alessandri (right) and his sons Jacopo and Antonio.
